WHY ARE USSR MILITARY BINOCULARS SO SIMILIAR TO GERMAN ONES?

USSR has had a long history of quality military optics. After the WWII Soviet Army have captured most of the German optical plants, including famous Carl Zeiss-Jena factory. They took the technology and tooling back to Russia, added their own refinements and began to built similar and sometimes even more powerfull binoculars. For many years these binocs were strictly for military issue. In the late 80's, some researchers proved that these armoured Military Binoculars outmatch their predecessor - world-famous Zeiss binoculars. PLEASE DON'T BE CONFUSED BY CHEAP IMITATIONS. THESE ARE ORIGINAL BINOCULARS with GENUINE QUALITY.

Military hardware is one of the few areas in the world where cost gives way to quality. Binoculars are considered to be a much more essential military tool than one might at first give credit for. The tank commander who sees and recognises an enemy tank seconds before his target sees him, will survive, the U-Boat commander equipped with a binocular which has only the slightest edge over the enemy will have a greater chance of achieving his mission and surviving. Just imagine for a moment, the crews of two stupendous, opposing battleships and the reliance on simple optical tools such as binoculars, then think of the immense cost in manpower and shipbuilding to the loser's nation.

Little wonder that during world war 2 the German manufacturers, Leitz and Zeiss were constantly engaged in developing optical coatings and binocular designs which were considered to be so important, that they were classified as 'secret weapons', they even coded their binoculars in order that it would be impossible for the allies to know where they had been designed and manufactured and therefore avoid commando or bombing raids.

The Russian military are no different! They want and need the very best glass they can make for their armed forces. These KOMZ 7x30 Commanders Binoculars have been used from Afghanistan to the Siberian wastes and are amongst the most robust glasses ever made. The KOMZ binoculars are listed in the Soviet military hardware listings.

Look what Dick Buchroester says about these binocs:

"Subject: Re: Russian 7x30's

Zero or negligible distortion.... I noticed that they don't really have field astigmatism. If the markings on the IF eyepieces are to be believed, they DO have about 5D of inward curving field curvature. So, I suppose young soldiers with springy eyes could get sharp images over the whole field, allowing just enough time for the eyes to focus! I've never seen this in a binocular before. Quite remarkable! Regards, Dick Buchroeder" (From Binocs mailing list http://home.europa.com/~telscope/listp100.txt )
